Our body needs lots of energy to keep us going through the day. Do you know where we get that energy? This energy comes from the food we eat! All kinds of different people enjoy different types of food. Their favorite meal may include noodles, nectarines, tortillas, or tofu. Most types of foods have some of what our body needs to stay healthy!

Food Groups Definition

The food which we eat daily is divided into different groups and these are called food groups. 


5 Types of Food Groups and Examples

Let's check out these groups' lists and see what is included in each group.

  • Fruit and Vegetables 
  • Carbohydrate
  • Proteins
  • Dairy
  • Fats


1)Fruits and Vegetables

This food group is rich in vitamins and minerals. This group can be further divided into two subgroups.


a)Fruits 

  • It includes all delicious and yummy fresh fruits like apples, pears, strawberries, and oranges.
  • Canned fruits that are unsweetened, are also included in it as most fruits are not available around the year.
  • Resins which are dried grapes and dried plums are also included here.
  • Fresh fruit juices are also included in the fruit subgroup without added sugar.


b)Vegetables

These also come from plants and we eat their different parts like
  • roots like the sweet orange roots of carrots.
  • stems of asparagus
  • leaf like a bunch of crunchy leaves of the lettuce head.

2)Carbohydrates

They are divided into 

  • a)Grains 
  • b)Starchy Foods 


a)Grains

If food is made from one of the plants like oats, wheat, and barley belongs here. Things made of flour like bread and noodles, oatmeal cereals, and even rice are part of this group.


b)Starchy foods

Potatoes and sweet potatoes are included in this subgroup as they have excess starch in them. These are good sources of calcium, iron, and vitamins.


3)Proteins 

Proteins come from two sources which are as follows:

a)Animal Source 

this group includes 

  • meat
  •  eggs
  •  tuna 

b)Plants source

  • beans
  • soya beans making peanut butter(peanut part) and tofu

4)Dairy

If food is made of cowmilk or soymilk it is included in this group. The food included in this group is a rich source of calcium that makes your bones and teeth strong. Some examples are 

  • yogurt
  • cheese
  • milk glass

5)Fats

In dealing with this group special attention is required. A little amount of fat is essential but too much use is alarming for health. This group can be grouped in such a way for ease.

  • a)Oils, Butter, Spreads, and fried items.
  • b)Food and Drink High in salt and sugar like chocolates, biscuits, soft drinks, cakes, and pastries.

Vegetable oil and olive oil are rich in unsaturated fats helping lower cholesterol and thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular accidents.

Hydration

Water is not part of any food group but eating is incomplete without drinking and the best drink is Pure Water Our body is losing water continuously by sweating, breathing, and going to the washroom. Try to drink 6-8 glasses of water to replenish these water losses.
